As a textile maker, I am frequently inspired by both the community and heritage of my home borough of Newham. Therefore, I was delighted to be part of the Charabancs and Cadillacs project, as the textile artist to lead the collaborative creation of a travel quilt with local community groups. The project developed partnerships with community groups to engage isolated adults (aged 60+) and students (aged 16-18) to improve wellbeing and create an intergenerational outcome. Participants took part in a therapeutic creative process, and in working on the quilt they were part of creating a contemporary record of personal memories of travel and holidays. Now the travel quilt is finished it will be stored in the bespoke travel chest and used in reminiscence sessions with the local community.
Thank you to the team at Community Transport Newham
and the National Lottery Fund for funding this project.
